Dawson City

We stayed at this campground for two night before moving across the river to a different campground for a night stay.
We got in line for the ferry to go across. It looked as thought it would be a while before the truck and trailer would get on, so JulieAnn suggested we run up and jump in Rob and TerryLee's truck who were just about to get on the ferry. Good thing, Grant and JulieAnn had to wait for 5 ferry crossings and a stoppage for ferry repair and were stuck for several hours. John and I got to the other side and were able to take a walking tour around the town and also take a 2 hour paddle boat tour up and down the Yukon River on the Kondike Spirit.

The S.S. Keno is one of the Historic Landmarks you can tour.
This is the paddle boat I want to take a ride on later today.

Not every one of the old building has been renovated and opened up for business. Some are just for show. They show what they used to be and  put mannequins in the windows.
 These below are real.

What was really cool was once we got home, we watched a repeat of The Murdock Mysteries episode that was shot in Dawson City. We got to see some familiar sites, and hearing about "mining the miners" and the "sourtoe" made so much more sense to us and really gave us a good laugh. The murder that took place happened because of the new dredge mining operation that was just being invented and someone wanted to buy up all the old claims so they could use it on the rivers and become millionaires. Amazing how that show uses true historical events in their show to keep it interesting.

After touring the town, we took a two hour tour on the Klondkide Spirit, an old paddlboat. It is a great way to learn a great deal about the history of Dawson City, paddleboats, and the Klondike Gold Rush. Well worth the time.

These are two islands in the Yukon River. The second one is called Dog Island. It is owned by a vet who raises sled dogs for dog sled races. The first one is called Sister Island. It was originally owned by the Sisters of St. Ann  Sisters Island, where nuns used to grow vegetables to supply the Catholic hospital. Sister Island is for sale if you have enough money in the bank to buy it.

This is the Paddlewheel Graveyard.  During the hayday of the Gold Rush, supplies were brought to places like Dawson City by paddle boats. During the winters, these river froze, the the paddle boats needed to be taken out of the rivers. This is one of the places where paddle boats were taken out and stored for the winter. But there came a point when there railroads took over carrying goods and paddle boats outlived their usefulness. So they were just left in the spot where they had been pulled out for the winter. This spot became their graveyard. If you count the smokestacks, you will notice there are actually several paddle boats that found their final resting place here. This is now a historic site and protected from looters.

This is a photo of a photo of the paddleboats that are resting in the graveyard.

The confluence, where the cloudy Yukon River meets the clear Klondike River. The reason the Yukon is so cloudy is not due to mud but due to glacial runnoff.

The temperatures in Dawson City have been in the 90's the entire time we have been here, luckily they have several ice cream shops with delicious ice cream!

We went back to Diamond Tooth Gerties for the 10 pm show.

John got his picture taken with the ladies.

Then we went to the Downtown Hotel for a SourToe Cocktail, or at least TerryLee was the only one brave enough to try that one.
